>>> nascar racing at mid ohio this afternoonin lexington, ohio it has been a weather interesting day so far sunny skies this morning cloudyas we got close to race time the race started under green and after two laps under green, the rain has brought up the first caution. i'm dave burns along with dale jarret alongwith mike massaro from pit road. you see the sprinkles going. rain in the forecast now it is warm outsidehere is what the radar looks at. you see it on the upper right. not too bad there. as we got closer to race time, it startedto build.

we expect more showers this afternoon. so as nascar decides what to do next, theytold the teams now that they will call these damp conditions pit road is closed at themoment when they open pit road, damp means the teams have the option, d.j., of goingto the rain tires or staying on the slicks for now. if they called it wet, everyone would changeover to the wet weather tires. right now, it is damp and an option>> i don't think they will open pit road yet they will see if they will get enough rainto where the teams feel comfortable coming in with the wet tires.

then nascar is out of that business it isup to the teams from their point forward through the race at to what tires they want on thecar. >> they will manage their sets for the weekend. four sets of slicks were given two sets ofrain tires they offered them and gave them the opportunity to purchase the third setof wet tires for emergencies only most of the teams, i assume, did that and have thosestanding by as well. so this is the part of the course that isnormally the fastest. right now, they work behind the pace car afterthe kink and down to turn number four as we take a look at the on-board cameras we havethis afternoon.

you are riding with ryan blaney on-board camera. only sprint cup driver in the event this afternoonstarted the field after adjustments to the race car after qualifying this is the sunenergy one camera he will be in the 88 here this afternoon. we will have the toyota on-board camera inthe 20 car the pole sitter, sam hornish jr. will carry the sunoco on-board camera whatis he thinking right now? >> sam>> yeah. >> i think he is thinking his car is goodenough to win in either condition i any back more to erik jones who had a tough weekendlast week he does have a lot of road racing

experience. he had a tough weekend at watkins glen heis outstanding driver i think his approach was better he qualified well. now you are throwing the factor of wet racetrack and tires he hasn't been on it will be very interesting to watch. there are some drivers inside and they aresmiling and happy right now. let's look at pit road it looks like it hasopened. >> the rain has increased. it will get wetter they are probably thinkingrain tires.

they get to keep their position on the trackonce they exit here should they choose to pit which they all are>> parker. >> the 19 there coming from third place. he will take four goodyear wet radials andsunoco fuel. he said the only thing on the radio was discussingthe rules this is a live pit stop. mike>> owen kelly has a lot of time racing in the rain they went with the radials meanwhile, sam hornish, four rain radials no chassis adjustment. it seems sam hornish just gets by kelly offpit road.

>> that was live pit stop. one time it would be pit stops where theydidn't lose positions is nascar called it wet. they call it damp and give the teams the option, the pit stops are live that is why you saw fast activity to get the drivers out beforethe next guy. here is ryan blaney. he had brake issues and started at the rearthe field. >> this is interesting to watch him come up. he got blocked in there too.

things not going his way right yet. >> they are back on track. you see the flashing red lights. windshield wipers and defoggers and rain tireswe're going rain racing at mid ohio for the xfinity series. >>> did you know you can watch every xfinityrace with the sports app with camera angles and track information? it is available on mobile tablets and connectedtvs. go to nbcssports.com/life and even in therain, d.j.

>> we are at the mid ohio sports course therain has intensified almost every car has been on and off pit road i'll say everybodyhas at this point. had a chance to take on rain tires and somehave been off the track. d.j., racing in the rain is a different thing. you take a different course around the track>> you are actually trying to go around and you will be out of the groove because of everystyle. the rubber that's there is more slick. you are out looking where there's nothingon you are trying to find grip by not being in the main part of the track.

we have a guy that has done some of that. we will let him talk about that because ihad a hard time staying on the track when it was dry. i never experienced it when it was wet. >> parker? >> it is a lot of fun, but not in the conditionswe're in at the moment i would call this torrential or monsoon conditions we are hiding undera tent here of erik jones. for a driver in the wet, you avoid the rakingline. you avoid the raking line because it has polishand rubber on it.

try to get away from it and find places wherethe asphalt is not polished and there is grit in these conditions, vision is probably thehardest thing spray from the race cars and being able to expel this much water off thewind screens is going to be tough. >> parker, thanks. we have a six-foot ziploc bag coming for youstand by for that. here is kenny habul. you can see the conditions he is dealing withevery team is required to put a wiper motor and blade on there along with a taillightnot a breaking light, but everyone able to see you down the straightaway and a defoggeras well.

you don't have to run the windshield wipers. >> a lot of them have rain on there. especially after they get going. they're having a hard time getting aroundhere under caution. >> all right, guys, we just spun out here>> and like being on ice in some places >> as parker pointed out, it is the worst-casescenario. if you have a wet race track and deal withthat, but when it makes it difficult to see and you are trying to figure out exactly howhard you can and can't go, we will see a lot of cars off the track.

>> let's see if we can see what happened tokenny habul here hang on. just a little bit of throttle there. >> that is what he is trying to see. how much throttle can i get. we talk about these spins. they spin in second gear that will make thismore difficult to go around this track. >> the revs are up the wheels are ready tograb more traction. what about more shifting would you ever goto a higher gear to avoid doing that >> there may be times they want to get itin a higher gear it was best for them to do

that>> nascar has drying gear here, but they will not quote/unquote dry the track. they are available for puddles like this situationhere nascar's goal and they issued the wet tires was to get events in they have to makeit safe to race and puddles like that have to be dealt with so a lot at stake here opportunities for winners and opportunities for people not to lose alot of points and for some, maybe to jump in the top 12, d.j. >> that is the group there that we see fromryan sieg in 11th to 15th, they have the opportunity to be part of the chase in the first yearfor the xfinity series getting in conditions

like this, this is a tough stretch. they have three road courses if a four-weekperiod these are teams that don't have the bigger funds or big crews to handle everything. you think last week at watkins glen poppedup and nowhere to go. tears up his race car. this was the tough week for them to get theback-up car ready you think about today and how difficult this is going to be. they have to look ahead in two weeks and dothis again. very difficult for these teams as they fightand battle to be part of the chase in the

top 12. >> you see at the left, blake entered witha 32--point lead. now two points above the cut line that broughtall the drivers up. >> today becomes a matter of survival forthem. stay on the track. don't make that mistake that will cost youa lot of points in this situation and try to give yourself the best opportunity in thenext six races inside the top 12 >> the month of august, road course monthfor the xfinity series three of the four weekends on the road course us mike>> we talked a little bit, dave, by guys with

experience on road courses. a couple of guys on the front of the field. owen kelly and sam hornish sam has more experience. his crew chief normally the team engineerwho has a lot of experience in fact, he may know owen kelly better than sam hornish doesin 2007, the crew chief for hornish was the team engineer for owen kelly in the v-8 seriesin sydney, australia that day was run in the rain owen kelly went to victory lane thatday and andrew dickinson came down to the finish line there may be some australian prideon the line as well. >> mike, you cannot make that stuff up greatstory.

we will watch kelly. he already has a doughnut. rain at mid ohio under caution, but closerto getting back to the green flag and racing to then flag >>> nascar on usa is brought to you by ford. we go further so you can and by auto zonehoods up, america. auto zone has everything you need to get inthe zone. auto zone. >> welcome back to the mid ohio challengeon a rainy day which we expected and the teams

were prepared for mentally and literally withrain tires issued by goodyear. we are about to see what they can do nascarhad the opportunity to get around the track in the pace car looking for puddles, d.j theysaid they will not dry off the track, but vacuum up that water. >> that is the biggest issue these areas wherethe water runs across and it creates that puddle they were talking through turn sixis where issues might be they will get as much as that. looking at the weather with more rain coming,it could be an issue through the day. >> a ten-minute downpour we had here recently.

sprinkles brought out the caution after twogreen flag laps on a dry track. then we had the big downpour which has nowsubsided that is the 33 of brandon jones back on pit road>> they have issues with the wiper system it will not function they have been down pitroad trying to repair that. it has not worked. instead, they will go the old fashion route. they break out the rain hoping that givesbrandon a little more visibility you can see one crew member just pounding on the windshieldtrying to loosen up something that might be stuck.

>> mike, that is what i would do if it isnot working, hit it hit it again see if you can get it to jar something loose. drying off the windshield and applying thatproduct and sheds the rain, d.j. >> that's the idea>> to the best of its ability. >> that's why they make it>> so brandon jones on pit road. one of several richard childress racing thatis sam hornish continuing his pace around. and we want to take a look at the entire track,d.j. let's look at it under dry conditions>> yeah. turn one is a left-hander.

you go through there in second gear back tosecond gear. the fastest part of the track with a kinkof a corner there. once it gets to turn four, over through turnnine, they run that in second gear that will be very, very difficult in the rain conditionsnow. a lot of this again, not a ton of shifting. a lot in second gear it will make it muchof a challenge. we will see them take a much different linethan what we saw earlier. >> 13 turns and we normally think of a fuelwindow being 30 to 32 laps here. now the other thing the rain does is bringsspeeds down

>> slower times here we saw sam hornish yesterdayin his final run of 84 seconds around here. 1:24 we will see probably a minimum of 15seconds more and probably closer to the 20 and 25 second range. you will slow it down that much more as theyfigure out what they can and can't do here which brings in better fuel mileage. if we have rain continuing on and we werelooking at most of them thinking about a two-stop race, possibly that from this point forward, they will be looking at one stop. >> brendan gaughan there wet weather tireson these xfinity series cars and we are back under green at mid ohio

>> this shall be interesting, dave>> the 98 car looking for position on the inside cautionly aggressively coming off theturn owen kelly to put the 18 up front already. >> he was able to get his up to speed a littlebit better. he tried stab the throttle more. they normally would have been around the curbingthere they are going outside of that >> you talked about oil and debris down theline. >> you are clear>> they look for places to find it >> we talked about brendan gaughan a coupleof years ago at road america >> nascar telling us the restart is underreview which they will do when there is a

possibility when someone jumped the gun alittle bit we will get clarification on that as soon as they bring it. they are calling that restart good oh, kellyis around. >> hang on>> he tried to keep it from stalling he does. he loses the lead on a very slick race track>> trying to get going out of the wet grass is going to be difficult and shooting himat the cars here comes ryan blaney >> owen kelly is going from the lead -->> take it easy going through here >> -- back to the middle of the pack>> so you see the 42 there of justin marks he has gone to the lead in that altercation.

>> one-car altercation>> very, very difficult conditions for these drivers so brendan gaughan in the 62 pullsinto second. sam hornish is in fact the leader marks isin second >> justin marks did a great job of gettingthrough all that. to get through that initial start down inturn two >> here's what happened to kelly. >> getting out there you normally would runyou can see that curbing is there. that's what the drivers will do. it is very, very slick even trying to powerup and trying to be careful.

>> you see hornish scoot through there andjustin marks goes around brendan gaughan marks, by the way, started ten and all the way upto second further back in the pack, racing teammate up by the wall, two on the outside. ryan reed looking for a place to go you haveto remember that approaching the corners, d.j., he will take the bottom line>> and you think it is that. drivers are not taking time to look in yourmirror. you have to be careful they are not payingattention. >> look at this visibility is very difficultthat is the 40 of the racer from europe his first race>> exactly the same spot that kelly went around.

>> ryan reed may have had a little assistancefrom his teammate there >> still on your left. clear. >> maybe not very happy with what transpiredbefore he felt like he might have been forced off course a little bit. >> they are both off that happened to kellylooked like he has been off again or was the recipient of dust from somebody else. there are sand traps here. this track still has lots of sand traps, d.j.

>> we thought it may benefit from wet conditions. owen kelly and nelson have spun off the course. >> both have not been in an xfinity car forthree years. he got around sam hornish. he goes to the lead in the chip ganassi racing42. >> he is a good road racer he has been inthese conditions and understands this more. you can see he is doing an outstanding jobnot spinning the tires like we have seen a lot of other drivers. >> this is what happened to nelson he putsthe power down

>> he just tried to get a little too muchthere one time. >> and then the 16 finds the gravel therethere is ryan reed back on track on the left. ryan had a great qualifying run. qualified eighth now runs back in the ninthposition >> we talked about ryan blaney we saw himin the shot he started in the rear to the 11th spot. >> brendan gaughan back just a 90 car ovfof lally. >> we saw the weather forecast this weekendand realized this would not be his best opportunity to win he stalled andy mid week what are youdoing i want to you come run my car.

they worked out a deal and lally is goingto work. >> i spoke to him about the rain he said i'mlooking at the race and finishing top ten. if i'm outside the top ten, i'll be destroyedthe biggest thing about the rain, he said, a lot of the guys will struggle. you see owen kelly get off here again. you see this place is slick because this isnot only polished on the groove, but off the groove he felt like some experience can helphim >> lally, parker, is all the way up to thirdbehind marks and hornish. not in the picture there as hornish keepsmarks in his sights.

>> and i don't think he has been in that situationfor a while. he has done it before, but he understandshe has a good race car and team behind him. just taking it easy. two of the drivers we talk about trying tobattle for the 12th spot >> the 39 came in here in 11th one positiongood on the chase standings, but 29 points ahead of the cut-off line. blake koch two points ahead of the cut-offline two laps ago, this is what happened to blake. adventure already.

>> he is charging the corner there. >> that is one of the tightest on the trackright there the keyhole. >> you see he gets by there. koch to the outside. getting around the 39 of sieg there. >> justin marks in the 42 cruising and youare right, d.j., that car looks very solid as it enters the corners not a lot of wigglethere. we talk about opportunities. this car this year shared with kyle larson.

and so, for marks, the opportunity to winmay not be there as often as it is for kyle larson. >> that's what you want. as a driver, you are looking for opportunitiesthat are there and you to showcase what you can do. with this series and opportunity to race inthe rain, it gives you a leg up >> you see how wide he entered turn numberone. here comes sam hornish>> the lap of the 51 on jeremy clements back in 37th position.

>> you know, dave, you think sam hornish isone of the guys looking forward to it raining to eliminate the competition. i was surprised when i talked to him today. he said my car is way too good in dry conditions. the other thing he was concerned about. the other drivers on the race track. he says my car is way too good i'm worriedabout somebody else making a mistake in the rain and taking me out. >> good point, mike.

it has been that way all weekend. it is the other guy you have to watch outfor, dale. >> there is so much going on>> he's stuck. that will bring out the caution for the secondtime today. caution at mid ohio sports car course an excitingevent happening right now as they navigate this lexington, ohio road course.o road >>> how do you get your nascar coverage onthe go cameras at your finger tips. you can listen to drivers and teams discussstrategy download at nascar.com/mobile. we are under caution for that car.

that is t.j. bell. he was under pressure for a guy on the quick>> he is trying to get more out of the car there is owen kelly trying to make his placethrough the field. drives it into the corner a little too hardt.j. >> the last corner was good and then that. >> just when you think you know what you cando. >> there is bell you see the radar right now. we are in the middle of that raining justa little bit harder here under caution as

the pace car has the field. crews taking action. that is justin marks he got around the 2 ofsam hornish. he leads at mid ohio my brother and i havealways been rivals. we would dream about racing each other, inmonaco. we were born brothers. competition made us friends. wish bold in the 2017 camry. toyota.

let's go places. >>> for over 60 years, stp has driven theperformance for nascar >> welcome back to the mid ohio challengeand challenge it has been i'm dave burns along with dave jarrett and parker kligerman alongwith the crew bringing you the racing this afternoon. the challenge has been to deal with the rain. race tires on the cars after they pitted. so far, d.j., justin marks with the lead>> it has been a challenge off the first lap. he picked up eight spots in one lap.

sam hornish was a second or a second and ahalf than the rest of the field he figured this out quickly. >> experience in this type of discipline giveshim confidence. he is taking that chevrolet up front. other cars coming to the front the 90 of lallyand bubba wallace. the 20 of jones keeping it on track. and the 24-year-old from israel running inthe nascar euro series he is here for his first start the goal is to run also a couplemore road course races in road america and a couple of ovals before the year is out mayberace here full-time next year.

>> i don't know what he can do in dry weather, but he is good in wet conditions. it is great he is getting this opportunityand aug the most of it right now. >> he is so excited to be here with the possiblyof rain, that lit him up further so continuing under caution. you see jeremy clements coming to pit roadin the 51 car. there is alone. part of the nascar next program to get youngdrivers from a diverse background involved in nascar they have certainly done it hereso under caution for the second time this >> on the radio show this morning, he saidhe has been hoping for rain all week he felt

like that gave him the best shot here thatis someone confident in the abilities. we see elliott sadler coming to pit road here. he is making adjustments, i believe. trying to make his car better. elliott told me what they can do with theshock adjustments and taking swing rubber out so he can get better forward matt. >> as you can see, wedge adjustments on thefull side of the race car the adjustment is four rain radials for the 1 car. trying to give him a little bit more grip.

you see the spring rubber on the rear makingthat adjustment making sure everything is working. not everybody is in, but it is good to seeelliott is fully functional >> on pit road as well david starr. d.j., if you make the car lean more when youdo that, which provides grip into the tires. >> that's what you're trying to do make thistire get as much grip as you possibly can in the different ways there are a couple ofways you have that. they soften the shocks it is where the carflops around a little bit you are not asking for it to corner quickly by taking the springrubbers out, it will help you with the forward

bite doing everything they can even thoughthis will put elliott back a way they can put the tires off and back on. they wanted to make the adjustments and puton fresh tires at the same time >> safety crews removed the 97 of t.j. bell from the sand trap. i'm dave burns along with dale jarret alongwith mike massaro from pit road. you see the sprinkles going. rain in the forecast nowit is warm outside here is what the radar looks at. you see it on the upper right. nottoo bad there. as we got closer to race time, it started to build. we expect more showersthis afternoon. so as nascar decides what

to do next, they told the teams now that theywill call these damp conditions pit road is closed at the moment when they open pit road, damp means the teams have the option, d.j., of going to the rain tires or staying on theslicks for now. if they called it wet, everyone would change over to the wet weather tires.right now, it is damp and an option >> i don't think they will open pit road yetthey will see if they will get enough rain to where the teams feel comfortable comingin with the wet tires. then nascar is out of that business it is up to the teams fromtheir point forward through the race at to what tires they want on the car.>> they will manage their sets for the weekend. the teams, i assume, did that and have thosestanding by as well. so this is the part of

the course that is normally the fastest. rightnow, they work behind the pace car after the kink and down to turn number four as we takea look at the on-board cameras we have this afternoon. you are riding with ryan blaneyon-board camera. this afternoon. we will have the toyota on-boardcamera in the 20 car the pole sitter, sam hornish jr. will carry the sunoco on-boardcamera what is he thinking right now? experience. he had a tough weekend at watkinsglen he is outstanding driver i think his approach was better he qualified well. nowyou are throwing the factor of wet race track and tires he hasn't been on it will be veryinteresting to watch. there are some drivers inside and they are smiling and happy rightnow. let's look at pit road it looks like

it has opened.>> the rain has increased. it will get wetter they are probably thinking rain tires. theyget to keep their position on the track once they exit here should they choose to pit whichthey all are >> parker.>> the 19 there coming from third place. he will take four goodyear wet radials and sunocofuel. he said the only thing on the radio was discussing the rules this is a live pitstop. mike >> owen kelly has a lot of time racing inthe rain they went with the radials meanwhile, sam hornish, four rain radials no chassisadjustment. >> that was live pit stop. one time it wouldbe pit stops where they didn't lose positions

is nascar called it wet. they call it dampand give the teams the option, the pit stops are live that is why you saw fast activityto get the drivers out before the next guy. here is ryan blaney. he had brake issues andstarted at the rear the field. >> this is interesting to watch him come up.he got blocked in there too. things not going his way right yet.>> they are back on track. you see the flashing red lights. windshield wipers and defoggersand rain tires we're going rain racing at mid ohio for the xfinity series. and track information? it is available onmobile tablets and connected tvs. go to nbcssports.com/life and even in the rain, d.j.>> we are at the mid ohio sports course the

rain has intensified almost every car hasbeen on and off pit road i'll say everybody has at this point. had a chance to take onrain tires and some have been off the track. d.j., racing in the rain is a different thing.you take a different course around the track >> you are actually trying to go around andyou will be out of the groove because of every style. the rubber that's there is more slick.you are out looking where there's nothing on you are trying to find grip by not beingin the main part of the track. we have a guy that has done some of that. we will let himtalk about that because i had a hard time staying on the track when it was dry. i neverexperienced it when it was wet. >> parker?>> it is a lot of fun, but not in the conditions

we're in at the moment i would call this torrentialor monsoon conditions we are hiding under a tent here of erik jones. for a driver inthe wet, you avoid the raking line. you avoid the raking line because it has polish andrubber on it. try to get away from it and find places where the asphalt is not polishedand there is grit in these conditions, vision is probably the hardest thing spray from therace cars and being able to expel this much water off the wind screens is going to betough. >> parker, thanks. we have a six-foot ziplocbag coming for you stand by for that. here is kenny habul. you can see the conditionshe is dealing with every team is required to put a wiper motor and blade on there alongwith a taillight not a breaking light, but

everyone able to see you down the straightawayand a defogger as well. you don't have to run the windshield wipers.>> a lot of them have rain on there. especially after they get going. they're having a hardtime getting around here under caution. >> as parker pointed out, it is the worst-casescenario. if you have a wet race track and deal with that, but when it makes it difficultto see and you are trying to figure out exactly how hard you can and can't go, we will seea lot of cars off the track. >> let's see if we can see what happened tokenny habul here hang on. just a little bit of throttle there.>> that is what he is trying to see. how much throttle can i get. we talk about these spins.they spin in second gear that will make this

top 12>> the month of august, road course month for the xfinity series three of the four weekendson the road course us mike >> we talked a little bit, dave, by guys withexperience on road courses. a couple of guys on the front of the field. owen kelly andsam hornish sam has more experience. his crew chief normally the team engineer who has alot of experience in fact, he may know owen kelly better than sam hornish does in 2007,the crew chief for hornish was the team engineer for owen kelly in the v-8 series in sydney, australia that day was run in the rain owen kelly went to victory lane that day and andrewdickinson came down to the finish line there may be some australian pride on the line aswell.

>> mike, you cannot make that stuff up greatstory. we will watch kelly. he already has a doughnut. rain at mid ohio under caution, but closer to getting back to the green flag and racing to then flag >>> nascar on usa is brought to you by ford.we go further so you can and by auto zone hoods up, america. auto zone has everythingyou need to get in the zone. auto zone. were prepared for mentally and literally withrain tires issued by goodyear. we are about to see what they can do nascar had the opportunityto get around the track in the pace car looking for puddles, d.j they said they will not dryoff the track, but vacuum up that water. much as that. looking at the weather withmore rain coming, it could be an issue through

the day.>> a ten-minute downpour we had here recently. sprinkles brought out the caution after twogreen flag laps on a dry track. then we had the big downpour which has now subsided thatis the 33 of brandon jones back on pit road >> they have issues with the wiper systemit will not function they have been down pit road trying to repair that. it has not worked.instead, they will go the old fashion route. stuck.>> mike, that is what i would do if it is not working, hit it hit it again see if youcan get it to jar something loose. >> that's why they make it>> so brandon jones on pit road. one of several richard childress racing that is sam hornishcontinuing his pace around. and we want to

take a look at the entire track, d.j. let'slook at it under dry conditions >> yeah. turn one is a left-hander. you gothrough there in second gear back to second gear. the fastest part of the track with akink of a corner there. once it gets to turn four, over through turn nine, they run thatin second gear that will be very, very difficult in the rain conditions now. a lot of thisagain, not a ton of shifting. a lot in second gear it will make it much of a challenge.we will see them take a much different line than what we saw earlier.>> 13 turns and we normally think of a fuel window being 30 to 32 laps here. now the otherthing the rain does is brings speeds down and 25 second range. you will slow it downthat much more as they figure out what they

can and can't do here which brings in betterfuel mileage. if we have rain continuing on and we were looking at most of them thinkingabout a two-stop race, possibly that from this point forward, they will be looking atone stop. >> he was able to get his up to speed a littlebit better. he tried stab the throttle more. as soon as they bring it. they are callingthat restart good oh, kelly is around. he has gone to the lead in that altercation.>> one-car altercation >> very, very difficult conditions for thesedrivers so brendan gaughan in the 62 pulls into second. sam hornish is in fact the leadermarks is in second >> here's what happened to kelly.>> getting out there you normally would run

>> who knew?>> i didn't know bubba was ready for this, but showing his skills not only road racing, but wet weather. and andy lally we knew this isn't a car thatwould run up front, but you put a driver with this experience in these conditions and youcannot be surprised this is not about your equipment. it is not about down force, butunderstanding the situation. >> wallace hasn't had a top ten in the lastfour races wanting something to happen here now looking good at second third place car, lally in the 90 seventh in 2014 at road america in the rain. that is the day, d.j., wherewe saw somebody throwing on the dries and making hay we could see that this afternoonas brendan gaughan comes down pit road he

was the guy that made it work in the wet weathertires back in 2014 parker >> you see that little bit of damage on theright front. that is why they pit he got in a bit of a collision on track they will puttires on here. wet radials and try with sunoco fuel trying to work on the right front fenderthis time >> 54 last from the end here, d.j. they'llfill it full of fuel what do you think? >> that's a long way to go the pace has slowed.we talked about how much would it slow down we are looking between 30 and 35 seconds alap it was slowing down hard to calculate. i'm not sure everybody over there knows exactlyhow to calculate the slowdown it could be a situation they may be in that now matt>> sam hornish had an adventure. he is on

pit road. you saw a crew member lean insideand wipe out the inside of the windshield. it may have fogged up affecting the visionthe four-tire change continuing on as they make sure all the damage that may have beenincurred over of the last couple of spins for hornish may be repaired to the best oftheir ability during time on pit red you can see a lot of debris caked in the grill abovethe splitter they will clear that off and hope for the best. sam had his hands full the last time on thetrack. >> he got brake dusts there.>> as outstanding as his lap was in setting a track record, his best job was getting outof the sand trap and not losing a lap.

>> something interesting going in the 90 carright now, andy lally has been discussing the pit strategy with his crew chief. actuallyhe made a pit call and said we are not going totake tires if we pit. we will go with fuelonly. dave >> interesting those goodyear wet weathertires lasting well wallace in the 6 chasing down martin in the 42. lally follows throughin second. >> and just to the other side.>> hangs on to it. marks clear for the lead here comes andy lally.>> bubba wallace charging back for that second spot>> look at that. not giving it up he will move to the outside line to find the gripnice pass for second for wallace.

>> you see the 20 of erik jones and alon daybehind. andy lally knows some of the drivers are racing for a championship he is not goingto do anything to jeopardize their day. >> i think lally has more there. it is aboutgiving himself a chance he knows he has an opportunity with the race car. no reason to push the issue. there is a lotof racing 52 laps to go in this. >> you look back from jones to alon day>> ask you said earlier these are the first laps justin marks has led. he is enjoyingit. and one of the more skilled drives chasing down bubba wallace. marks has a lot of experiencein the rain as well he is using it to his advantage right now.>> so we talked about it, mike a lot of the

drivers looking at it today with rain withfear there were others looking at a chance to win this afternoon marks is one of thoseout front. you can see the cautious pace they are racing around this track.>> they are now getting accustomed to it more. the rain has subsided a bit now. they areable to see a little bit better they have a better idea again how hard they can canattack these corners and exit of the corners. >> challenge for alone. now we see anothercar off track. that is the 74 he has spun it he will get it going here is what happenedto roger >> looks like he got the right side off thetrack a little bit. as he tried to correct >> look at that. dirt track coming out ofthe keyhole.

>> the speeds have picked up a little bitjustin marks now a couple seconds faster than what we originally saw>> as you said, d.j., they are getting used to the conditions the conditions are improving>> they are improving somewhat it is still treacherous. the more you try to attack here, the more of a precarious position you put yourself in it is still extremely wet anddifficult. >> talk about the challenge for alon day asyou look back on him. his race car in europe is lighter and less horsepower. you add theweight and horsepower and the wet conditions, that can be a challenge.>> it can be a real challenge, but this is a young man confident in his abilities inthis weather all he is doing is being smooth

as he possibly can knowing he can take advantageof the situation. >> parker.>> dale, the speeds are picking up, but from pit road, it is not raining at this time thecars run on the race track with the wet tires they will expel the water off the line the62 car of brendan gaughan is discussing we they think about needing to go to slicks aroundlap 45 he said i'll keep you in tune. you see him get almost sideways there. that crossoverpoint is important for people to keep an eye on if it doesn't rain.>> parker, you are saying that is a driver call as much as a crew chief call?>> it is a driver call we see this in racing. it is up to the driver he is the only onethat truly knows what the grip level is on

the track. one of the toughest things is thecar who goes first will have the most risk, right there is the most reward if that dryline comes in and you are able to get the slicks and be five or ten seconds faster, you gain a lot of time it is up to the driver absolutely when to do that>> you think he is optimistic thinking at lap 40 something might be good enough to dothat. >> we just don't know. it has been so funto watch so far and ryan reed has been part of that. early in the race, he had a goodqualifying run, but got into his teammate he pushed him off the track. we say day goingfor his third around jones that's for fourth, actually. and the 16 of ryan reed right behindhim

>> you can see he made the pass there. he slowed down the car and pointed in theright direction and gave himself room because he knew he was carrying more speed in thecorner. instead of taking the outside line and possibly getting off, he went in the middleand got the car slowed down. >> one of the keys d.j., it is the same forthe dry, you want to do your braking >> you want to try to always do that radialtires don't like being with braking and turn at the same time. these types of situations, you certainly don't want to number that situation you see ty dillon. he is in the rear becauseof the adjustments they had to make he is doing a nice job here he is making a run backto the top five

>> in the white and blue 98. mike on the 3.>> d.j., he did not start in the back today because he encountered a number of problemshe crashed in the second practice yesterday they had to do extensive repairs to the rightside of the car while they were doing repairs, they may have damaged the seal on the axle.they had to repair that this morning and started in the back of the field what was the problemin the back ty told me he needs to be aggressive and meticulous. meanwhile, we have one caroff the track. >> that is jordan anderson second car bothof the cars in the sand this afternoon jeremy clements stopped on course a battle for thelead heats up justin marks getting lots of pressure from wallace jr if there is one thingin the dna of roush, it is road racing.

>> look out. hang on to it.>> he has done a great job to this point of being patient and getting a lot out of thiscar. there is the lead right in front of him>> and right now, jordan anderson trying to get the 77. the leader barely misses him oh,my goodness. that was close marks is through and so is wallace.>> like a video game, d.j. mike >> is mocha man a video game it is interesting.we noted the run that bubba wallace has had. you see another car off the track. you considerhis limited experience racing on road courses, let alone in the rain i asked him how muchexperience he had in the rain he said i raced one race in the rain a legend car race incharlotte a few years ago. not the same.

>> i bet he did well he is sure showing himselfhere. we saw the two cars in trouble the lead got hot there for a moment marks on a coupleof corners over wallace the battle is not going away, though and i think wallace isone of the drivers, d.j., give him confidence and he will go for it great exit at the keyhole.wallace with the lead. >> you can see bubba trying to charge a littletoo hard goes off just after he took the lead oh, no>> keep digging. keep going come on. keep it rolling. keep it rolling.>> and he's got it he's through and it is such a big difference when you're the leaderyou can see the drivers think it is getting a little bit better they are trying to attacka bit more that is just not the case.

>> here is wallace getting the 6 car. alonpushing for the line. he is back in the sand trap. can he get out again yes. wow! so alonday recovered and tried to take the line that he wanted. wallace was there. he pushed the6 car out. now ryan blaney attacking ryan reed and here comes p.k. jr>> down to the back of the course the caution is out one of the championship contenders, daniel suarez is stuck. so on the upside, a win and berth in the xfinity series chase, but he wanted to do much better than this here today.>> such challenging conditions that these drivers are facing. especially for so manythat have never found themselves racing under these types of conditions.>> for his part, a lot of experience on the

run off the track and doing a lot of mistakeswe gained a lot of positions on that we were the first ones to get the slick tires on madeup some time on the track i believe it will rain and i really have to look at the radar.i can smell it coming. i think we're going to get rain. i feel we're going to go throughanother cycle. >> as you watch and brought out your strategy.what is it like watching your driver making his way from the back of the field in rainyconditions to the front? >> it is satisfying. as hard as we had towork on the car yesterday and rebuild the body damage and i would have to thank allthe guys for working as hard as they could. it is paying off>> quite a bit of racing to go

>> the drivers have a lot of variables.>> that is the biggest thing we are watching is the radar. we have to play it and watchwhat happens here. the good thing is ryan is fast in the wet and dry here. we are watching that 2 car sam is pretty fast.>> how would you evaluate that young driver not really experiencing the rain>> he said he was pretty good in the rain at gopro. he has this handled. that is wherehe did all his research he did a lot of really good -->> hold on it is now just starting to downpour he has to talk to his driver>> entertaining he is mentioning gopro complex in moorsville. the owner by the way is justinmarks.

>> i would say so. they are getting readyto get more experience in it is raining hard on the front stretch right now.>> folks, let's review started in the dry raced in the rain. tried to keep your caras clean as you could and then dry conditions brought the cars to pit road for slick tires.now the rain is back and with 23 to go, everybody's on pit road mike>> and as you might imagine, dave, everyone putting the rain tires back on the car. bubbawallace among them several cars, including everybody on pit road. ty dillon. we talkedto his crew chief about what they felt and the skies opened up. rain tires for everyoneon pit road it is a busy time. >> see the action going on there. while wewere looking at the pit stop the 19 of suarez

drivers and teams the option to choose thetires. >> at that point in time when the rains camedown hard it made the race very entertaining >> one of the many restarts we had. we havehad six cautions today sam hornish looked like his car was running well better thanowen kelly's there kelly had taken the lead showed you just how treacherous the conditionswere. justin marks with the challenge in the 42 for hornish. he would take the lead here.>> he was going to be the best handling the wet conditions.>> hornish on the restart. got out of control heading through the left-hand in turn oneand brendan gaughan slamming into him looking for room to race and it did not get betterfor sam hornish. you see justin marks challenged

by bubba wallace>> for a few hundred feet until he went down he could not negotiate this into turn four.>> keep going. keep digging. >> allgaier off track. suarez in the sand>> and around goes lally piquet goes into him spinning at top of the screen. a lot ofaction on that one. it was an interestingturning point. andy lally was the first to put onthe slick tires, d.j. >> he came back out and ran a bit faster lapgot him up to the lead the others had to come in and make pit under green to get slickson. >> lally led three laps on the day. this wasa great battle. blaney going underneath ty

dillon so that brings us here where the 18car of owen kelly having last pitted on lap 43, stayed out so the 19 car of suarez isnow on pit road. and one lap off the pace now unless there is no way owen kelly hadrace tires on the car. we shall see interesting strategy called here for owen kelly boughthimself a plane ticket to spend the month of august here in the states. he is from tasmania.thought perhaps something might happen in terms of the road course races did not knowdriver matt would go through emergency surgery and would be the driver in the 18 car. hegot the call for joe gibbs racing they put him in the car for this race and he will runroad america for joe gibbsracing. whether or not he wins here today is yet to be determined.let's take a look at today's toyota driver

update as you ride on board with erik joneshe is running tenth. kelly running first. and j.j. yeley a littledamage on the 44 car, d.j. he kept it up front. >> especially when it rained, he did a nicejob hasn't been inside the top ten most of the time with the wet track conditions erikjones in the tenth spot he has been able to bounce back.>> if ever a name was appropriate for a race, the mid-ohio challenge it has been all thatand more for the drivers. we are glad you have joined us for today's action>> i'm seeing how wet the race track is now over in certain parts. we are getting rainon the front straightaway, but others are getting a lot more you have to have the raintires now if you are going to go anywhere

>> we're on the edge of a system we're notgoing to get hit by it completely, but it is catching us mike>> dave, it is interesting you look at justin marks and see what he has done he led 32 lapsfirst 32 of his career in the xfinity series all been on the rain tires that is not a surprisewhen you consider his background. 2001, he made his debut in the rain he understandsthis rain concept. does very well when they went to slicks, it is curious to hold theposition on the track. he does hold it and now it is raining again. this may play rightinto his hands because he obviously wants to see a race. dave.>> you got that right, mike. come together green with 20 laps to go. and you see owenkelly peeling off in the 18 car. he will give

up that spot. that puts justin marks to theinside ryan blaney takes the lead as we go back to green here at mid-ohio contact. cars off track the 22 of blaney and marksgot away free. >> ryan reed, i believe that is spinning.>> rain tires on the left. and justin marks survived that restart. now we see the 13 withheavy contact. >> conditions back to very, very slick andvery, very treacherous. you see hornish back in near the 2 car trying to get around andsadler in 13th justin allgaier in seventh looks like a whole race car. caution is outagain here at mid-ohio >> here we go again. look at yeley's car.>> a lot of contact. poole around in the 48

spins.>> caution is out. >> my goodness>> and justin marks appears he is off the track as well look at yeley's car. we justtalked how he had a little damage, but has done a good job so far. he got into someone.or vice versa. a lot just happened. let's show you a couple of replays. a couple getas many looks as we can. there was so much going on down in turn one contact from allgaierand blaney >> and sam hornish was there he got wide tryingto get a little bit more than the track would allow.>> 3 around the 16 >> and you see the contact

>> you see alone day going by in the 40 nocontact with hornish there. look at that view. they are a lot wide there, d.j>> these restarts. that turn one is an exciting turn and one the drivers have not figuredout. justin marks has cleared it out. bubba wallace in second place with that time>> a little contact through here coming through and down to turn four i believe that is wheremarks got himself in trouble you heard the background of screaming tires. somewhere ismarks outside of your screen you see preece in the gravel on-board again with hornish.>> just watch him here >> there is yeley.>> caution's out >> that's where yeley crunched into preece.that is how sam got around with contact.

>> straight on straight on. caution is out>> and he kept it moving, d.j. that is the key through the gravel>> it looks like it might have gotten into the tires a little bit as he tried to keepit going. >> all of this happening with just 20 to go.my goodness. and sam has done a good job of turning that 2 car in the right directionafter he gets wrong. that was the result for yeley.>> he had way too much speed for everything happening in front of him. he tried to slowdown and wasn't able to do that before a lot of damage i can tell you in turn five there. habul. he got mixed up in the turn one incidenton the restart.

>> kenny one of many drivers in the 88 carthis year kenny takes it to the road courses for junior sports. 26 caution laps run today.the rains are back here at mid-ohio you won't miss a thing as we watch what these driversdo under caution. we will go nascar side by side we know the fans do, too xfinity series onfriday coverage begins at 7:00 on u.s.a. network on nbc sn. the fun starts at 7:30 bristolnight race d.j. called it the most 500 lap fun a driver can have.>> and then he said nothing. >> so mike has caught up with mike shiplin,i believe. >> caught up with mike shiplet we talked aboutyour driver and his expertise in rainy conditions

he has quite a history there do these rainyconditions in the closing laps play into your hands?>> real good the katar chevrolet has been playing good in the rain there's extra water, oil, something in turn five luckily we went off track there, got through the gravel trap sitting p-6. we should be able to get back up there in fouror five laps and city get in the lead. >> we've documented the laps justin has ledtoday the most laps he's ever led. put it in perspective. how big is this for he andhis team >> it's a big day for the whole 42 team. everybodyprepares the cars back at the shop, building them it's a total team effort and everybodyis just giving 100% to give justin the best

finish you can.>> justin doing his own part right now, dave, holding it inside the top ten you know hewants more than he's already got. >> mike, the next restart will be very, veryinteresting. >> yeah. i think, you know, something thatjason verdette brought up in his interview was something that parker and myself had talkedabout, as the track started drying out and they were still running in the area with therain tires on earlier, well, that put rubber down and then things that have happened. sonow where we talk about them trying to find grip, the whole track is going to be basicallyslick. so now it's more in the driver's hands than even ever before to try to be good withthe throttle and easy on the brakes, too,

in what you're trying to do so managing thattype situation we're going to see who's the best at that and darrell wallace has donea great job all day long he's the man that's going to be in control out front and ableto get it done, but i'm sure that he's going to have to battle justin marks, the otherdriver we've seen be very good in these conditions. >> d.j., let's go back to the restart on lap32. see what happened to erik jones, the car to the right as he dives in, gets out of control.>> yeah. he lost the front end there. he tried to be a little too aggressive got into andylally there. then as he spun around he got hit pretty hard in the rear.>> 98, yeah. >> yeah. looked like a ton of damage. theywere able to make a lot of repairs to his

car they had plenty of time under the cautionto do that his crew took the time to make those repairs, and here he sits fifth spotnow >> parker?>> as you said, chris gerhardt, you're up to fifth before the race you told me we'regoing to wing it like everybody else was this part of the plan of winging it>> how could you possibly make a plan there's been dry racing, wet racing, dry racing andwet racing, so luckily we've kept our dewalt camry waterproof. erik is having a fun time, man it's cool and something you'll definitely be able to talk about for a long time to come.>> it started raining a lot harder both of our eyes got very wide you guys have struggledat road courses not even having the rain as

a factor. talk about that young driver andwhat he's been able to accomplish in that race car.>> it's just something he's never done before. a lot of people forget he's 20, young, comingacross a lot of firsts in his career road course racing with big, heavy stock cars isone of them as you can attest to you've lived it. on top of that, you throw rain on it.it's a first for him he's got nothing to lose >> big learning experience for the whole number22. >> andrew dickinson is making his crew chiefdebut with the 2 team it's going pretty well sam hornish has been in the top ten. it's been an up and down day, how would youdescribe it.

>> exactly like that we've had a little bitof bad luck and sam's done a great job. >> 16 laps to go you have a heck of a shoebehind the wheel. can he get to the front? >> as long as he can stay on the racetrack,we'll be fine. >> a lot easier said than done especiallyin these conditions. >> mike, the bullet points are simple at thispoint and they include staying on the racetrack, but the one thing i was thinking through thatwas it was back to your comments, d.j., about being careful and what you need to do it'sthe other guy the other guys going for your spot that get out of control and take youout you can't control that. >> no, you can't control that. these driversdon't know what part is the best part of the

track to be on in the next 15.>> sunday night football is coming up soon on nbc and these gentlemen right here aredoing their own preview of that. >> got a pretty good game going on here.>> i see a size differential for one player. >> little man over there on the right, he'sgot to be careful. watch out now. i see him as a wide receiver he's got -->> oh, lefty. >> you and i saw the same thing. how aboutthat >> i think that's what i had to do with myquarterback career. receivers couldn't catch the passes going end over end it made it remo different. >> you never played mid ohio he's going hecould go all the way!

thing to do to possibly win this race is juststay on the asphalt for the last 14 laps. >> drivers often talk about racing the racetrackthis is certainly one of those situations with rainy conditions they have on goodyearwet weather tires, but it's still very treacherous. >> yeah. i'm watching and listening to thesedrivers just trying to go down the front straightaway here they can't even get in the gas goingstraight >> justin marks challenging for third. he'llmove to our right and off the track in the back, that's elon day collecting it see ifmarks can make this pass. does he have grip up there he does. he gets through.>> see marks trying to really get some grip and put out as much power as he can on thislonger straightaway. the key is going to be

don't attack too hard into the corner. letyour car roll as much as you possibly can again, keeping it on the asphalt is goingto be key >> darrell wallace jr. has not yet won inthe xfinity series. probably wouldn't have guessed that it could come at a road course, but he has embraced today. he has raced hard and he leads with 13 to go.>> 62 of gaughan is off. and keeps it fired there you see the leader on the right. thereis wallace brendan on the left there hoping for a much better day than what he has gotten.came in so optimistic that if it would rain he would have the upper hand, and unfortunatelyit's bit him >> five and away>> there it is careful. right off the track.

the leader no grip out there.>> wallace gives up the lead >> hard. you're clear>> dillon will move to the lead. ty dillon your lead.>> i'm not sure how nascar will view that. >> nice and smooth he was inside that>> white line coming to pit road normally indicates that you are committed to comingto pit road. wallace just trying to keep his car back to the track. ray black jr. with trouble 77 of jordan andersongoes around him black gets the 07 fired and back on the black this is the battle for thelead. ty dillon now has it in the 3. marks in second and the 6 of wallace trying to comeback.

>> yeah, right here ty dillon, look out thefront this isn't worrying about what's happening behind you, who's coming after you do whateveryou can do to keep your car going straight here keep it, again, on the asphalt that'sthe one thing trying to attack this too much right now we've seen what it's done to theseother drivers that have the lead have had the lead.>> and wallace off the track again in turn four he finds the beat but he keeps it goingso darrell wallace jr. was the leader at the restart. now finds himself just trying tocrawl back and find a spot in the top ten and keep that car on track.>> this is a long 12 laps to go here mentally for a driver to stay focused, keep your mindon the job at hand not worrying about those

drivers around you ryan preece doing a nicejob here trying to do too much there. >> preece's 01 in seventh. little squirrelythere bubba wallace back to eighth here are the leaders going through turn 12 and thelefthander turn 13 back to the start/finish line. as you talked about, d.j., you hearthem just spinning those tires trying to find that grip sam hornish now up to third in the2 car. you see joey gaesoff in the 52 you look back, there comes sam hornish top ofthe screen. that's the gap back to third so we taekd aboutit earlier trying to find where the grip in the track is dillon trying to out master markshere it's been such a, choice of word here, drought for ty dillon. since he won at indianapolis,67 races since then he has watched others

go to victory lane could it be his turn heretoday? in the championship standings right here now, ty has outscored everyone who doesn'thave a win, but a win would lock him into the xfinity series chase mike>> dave, if you've ever driven down the highway in a rainstorm, and i know you have, the lastplace you want to be is behind another driver spraying rain on to your windshield that'sdisastrous. that's what justin marks is experiencing meanwhile, just the opposite for ty dillon,d.j how much of an advantage do you think he has being able to see in front of him versuswhat justin marks is encountering right now? >> huge advantage. that's such an advantageof being there and just doing your job. we've seen justin marks trying to get out of thatline of sight to where he is able to see the

racetrack and hit his marks and do what heneeds to do, but you can see he's right there now putting some pressure on him i think tydillon started to look in the mirror understanding he's coming. that's only going to hurt hisprogress and try to keep the lead. >> keep up the spray, that's to our advantage.>> you heard the spotter, give him a big spray. run in the water make that a blinding sightfor justin marks >> more than anything, you've just got todo your job. keep your car on track headed in the rightdirection. he's going off now >> so difficult. justin marks back to thelead. dillon for second. >> go back on. go back on p-2.>> so hard to focus on a road course, d.j.,

when the car is completely under you, butwhen it's going all over the place with a lack of traction here, that's even tougher.>> yeah, these cars have been out here a long time with the mental strains that they'vehad to deal with today in so many different types of conditions here, so it really wearson you. you know, trying to do all the right things here and you've got a driver here now, justin marks, never been in this situation before in the xfinity series>> there you see jordan anderson going off again. 77 car>> he's going to get it headed out of there and get out of the trap>> you mentioned justin marks shares this ride, the leader does, with kyle larson therehe is right there. so far this year best finish

for marks was in 11th place and that tookplace at talladega. never seen victory lane in the xfinity series>> we saw him early in the race. he was the best at this, and it seems like since therestart here he's kind of settled down doing the things that he needs to do. and he hasby far most of the time a second to two seconds faster than anyone else.>> he's really had the best car today in the rain i would say combination driver skilland setup. >> yeah. i'm going to give this -- this isa time, and they did a great job preparing this race car, but this is all about the driverunderstanding what he can and can't do you know, having a good setup under the race car, that doesn't have anything to do with what's

taking place see ryan preece getting off.he's had an outstanding run today. trying to get a little too much in turn 12. >> oh, the 97 of t.j. bell finds the barrierthere after a spin let's see if he can get it refired. nascar trying very hard to keepthe drivers safe but let them race in situations where they can throw a local yellow and belldoes get it fired little dicey with cars coming over the hill.>> there is not a good spot to be turning around. the traffic is going to be comingeven though it's not as high of a rate of speed as they were earlier here's bubba wallacelally behind him was there contact? we'll have to get another look 22 of blaney andhere comes the 7 of allgaier taking advantage

justin allgaier powers through in that 7 car.saw the seas parting and took advantage of that situation. a long day off the pace inthe 40 >> he's had some contact with the left frontthere could have been at any time. >> oh, and lally a little off road excursionagain in the part of the track that first bit him this afternoon sadler wide of turn5. >> kelly had worked himself back up insidethe top 10 before he got off track there. >> and sadler was running 11th and allgaier, left sides off into the grass that's dangerous here comes blaney. ryan blaney will take overfifth. justin marks lead in the front now 8 seconds over ty dillon, the accomplishedroad racer. trying to keep it on the track

and out front.>> yeah, that last lap he was 4.5 seconds faster than second place ty dillon. blaneyoff ryan reed around bubba wallace trying to avoid him gets off the track as well wallacewill come by >> i can tell you ryan sieg's been off thetrack, too, over around turn 7. >> wallace will be shown in eighth, reid inninth. sieg in 19th restarted in the top ten. ray black jr. way too much speed going downinto four he's in the gravel again >> it has been quite the excursion foray blacktoday, along with many others out here. >> there's no question about that>> and there is ryan sieg, the 39 car who does not need a disastrous day based on wherehe is in the championship trying so hard as

a small team to make their way into the chaseand ray black has continuing problems i don't know if he can see, d.j. holy cow meanwhile, marks keeping that 8 second gap over ty dillon. this time by seven laps to go. i'm tellingyou, turn four has become a nemesis to the entire field.>> they've got their own path down through there now running -- been more off coursethan they have been on. >> this great battle continues for fifth.allgaier got it back what's blaney going to do?>> well, if you start trying to race each other, that's when you find yourself gettinginto real trouble. this is totally about him. we talked about a place like darlington that'sso tough about racing

the racetrack and not your competitors, well, that's exactly what you have to do right here in this situation once you start trying tomake a pass and race someone that's around the same speed, that's when you find yourselfoff course. >> blaney coming by the start/finish lineto recapture fifth. good battle behind them going on between andylally and bubba wallace. >> jeremy clems is off course.>> top of your screen wallace has gotten the best of lally teammate reed coming throughthere's elliott sadler in the blue number 1. he's not giving up parker with more onthe driver in the 90, andy lally? >> a lot of forms in racing, we call rainthe great equalizer. what a great showcase

of that, andy lally he got the call to getinto this car early wednesday. he was going to try to set a street record in the streetluge packed everything up he's having a great run in the 90 team. falling back to 9th. onebig problem as you see him disappear, he can't see. his windshield wiper is not working atthis time you can see it not moving at all. he's had that problem. the biggest problem, when you can't see you can't seem to get through the corners.>> parker, he's just happy ray black navigated the track that time and kept it on courselook at that that is tough going. they're required to run a defogger inside the windshieldthere. and then the wiper and the wiper motor on there you can see justin marks, he's justfine. i don't know about the defogger.

>> yeah, he has an 11 second lead now stillevery lap is somewhere 2 to 3 seconds faster than anybody else on the track. what an outstandingjob that justin marks is doing here. >> just his 25th career start in the nascarxfinity series. >> ty dillon, the second place car. hornish, another 10 to 11 seconds behind him so they're really spreading out now, d.j to your pointearlier, racing the racetrack for the top cars appears to be what they're doing.>> that's all you can do at this point in time. it's just a matter of survival herethese are conditions that very few, if any of these drivers, have ever encountered, haven'tencountered, especially in stock cars getting this done the biggest thing that can hurtjustin marks where mike bliss off trying to

get back on. that's what he's going to have to dodge rightnow i'm sure they're telling him, look, you've got a 15 second lead take it easy make thesepasses on the straits where you can. >> well, there are spotters around the trackfor these drivers but we talk about the vision out the front, d.j. what about seeing somebodyin your mirrors >> they're not really looking. all they'redoing is trying to see what you can up this track in these conditions right now.>> listen, this is the time that justin marks is glad he's driving a neon yellow car atleast and not a black car, that's for sure. >> absolutely. see, he's still trying to attackthings hard, a little harder than probably

what he needs to here coming to get 5 to gohere shortly. >> here comes justin marks, 5 to go this timeby. >> 5 to go you've got two slow ones in frontof you, two slow ones. >> and the only thing standing between heand the checkered flag now and a victory in the xfinity series is a mistake on his partor someone that he's racing around here as he catches these slower cars.>> got to catch them at the right time got to make sure they see them typically you wantto apexthos corners and that could be a cut across the bow of the leader who gets verywide right there let's head down pit road mike.>> well, dave, if justin marks were to be

able to complete this victory it would behuge for a number of reasons. not because it would be his first team to win but it wouldallow them to honor ryan clauson. it is on the team. bryan clauson drove for them asa development driver in 2000 and 2008 drove 28 races justin marks is trying to honor himwith a trip to victory lane where he'd like to park this 42 car. >> bryan always ended his sprint car weekends#parkedit we lost bryan last week in a racing accident and they honored him this weekendat the knoxville nationals. so sad to see him go he was so well liked, d.j., and a fiercecompetitor. >> he was a great competitor, outstandingdriver and just -- i think that all week what

we've seen are why he was loved by so manypeople, because of the special person not only was he outstanding behind the wheel ofanything that he got behind racing wise, but he was just a tremendously good person. andnow the caution out. >> this will change things in a race that17 second lead that justin marks had. caution is for the 97 of t.j. bell who until a momentago could not get the 97 refired been just a little bit of contact there today for t.j.we thought the carnage was going to be next week at bristol for all the body damage, right,d.j. that clearly looked like he got into the tire barrier, all that black on there.>> at least the tire barrier >> so here it is they come by this time therewill be only three laps remaining and maybe

two by the time we get the green flag to seewho can win here at the mid ohio sports car course>> talked about a mistake was the only thing that could possibly keep him from gettingthat checkered flag. well, a restart could. >> they will line up behind the pace car andwhen the signal's given, they'll double up for the restart. and that will be ty dillonand sam hornish jr. and ryan blaney, very fast race cars in the top four.>> yeah. if we get down to an overtime situation trying to make it around where the overtimeline is situated, it may get dark before then. >> the overtime line is just after the kinkheading towards that treacherous turn four but the other action spot, you see it rightthere, pan out, we'll give you an idea where

that is, just past the kink and heading downinto the fastest part of the track. they have to get there, but we're not in that situationyet. we'll explain all the rules there if that should happen. so justin marks behindthe pace car trying to win for the first time in this series. then he'll watch tonight atthe knoxville nationals as the car he co-owns with kyle larson driven by shane stewart triesto take the checkered flag there. what another emotional victory that would be as we heardfrom mike earlier on how this team would love to honor bryan clausen and his family>> d.j., what shape do you believe this racetrack is in right now from what you're seeing>> bad >> i was hoping for slightly improved overa few laps ago.

>> no, i don't really think that it is. youknow, just because i think that, you know, with the rubber being put down whenever wehad a dry track, you know, what these drivers are fighting now with the tires they've hadon there for a long time. we've had people off the course bringing mud back onto theracetrack. there's just so many things that have made this just what seems like impossibleto navigate, but justin marks has shown he's the one that can do it the best.>> but it's going to be about getting a good restart here. he's going to be in controlof that, but getting himself clear of ty dillon and sam hornish who's going to be lining upthird. ryan blaney, he was off course it seemed like four or five times during that run sincethe last restart, but he's got himself up

here in the fourth spot now >> and what's the key to getting a good restartin these conditions, d.j. >> well, just being smooth with the throttleit's the same thing that's made him better than everyone else, being able to manage thatthrottle and get the power down and not trying to be too excited in getting that and makingthat happen so you want to get that good restart, but if you allow yourself to try too hardin that situation, then you'll find yourself really spinning and getting yourself in aworse situation than if you were to have taken your time he's shown he's the best at it,so just show that and continue to do the things that got you in this position of leading thisrace

>> today at the midohio sports car coursehas been a test of olympic proportions. during the rio olympics you can catch nascar on nbcsn from the bristol motor speedway you won't want to miss it. getting a lot of one linersfrom the producer now they are pretty funny, actually.>> yeah? >> olympic comparisons can't share them allthen he'd feel too good about himself. everyone today has done an outstanding job on our crew.here we go they've weathered a lot including our camera positions out on track who havebeen in the wet all day long pit reporters, their camera crews. see them all around herethere they are what a good job they've done and, yeah, the fans i'm being reminded ofstuck it out as well they love the road course

racing they expect conditions like this andthey know they're going to keep racing. >> yeah, they came prepared for this, probablyeven more so than drivers and teams even though it looked like this would be the case allweekend as a driver you prepare yourself for it but you really can't prepare for what youhave encountered out there today. talk about everything and all the cliches.how about the name of the race itself it couldn't have been a more appropriate for what thesedrivers have had to face >> the mid ohio challenge. thank you. and, yes, they have been accepting it all day long. parker>> yeah. one driver that's been up to the challenge today even though he's had an upand down day has been erik jones his crew

chief chris kbar came across the radio saidthe fastest is 22 and the other is 42 he was leading by a mile the one phrase he gave himwas be prepared, erik, please be prepared >> that's a lot to think about when you considertoday. couple more repairs on daniel suarez car parker>> yeah, you actually see them right now just going on the windshield putting rain-x onit. he had something splash up within the car he got the inside of the windshield hewas not able to see. also on the outside he was complaining of visibility at this pointthey decided to come in, make it so he could actually see and go out there for the lastcouple of laps >> and, d.j., these cars in dry conditionsoften tuned to perfection the wet weather

just throws a whole lot of curveballs at them.>> there's so many different things it's amazing they continue to run with all of this andespecially as many times -- i mean, it's literally been every driver in this field has been offtrack at some point in time and we haven't seen our last one off track as they get readyfor this restart >> here they go. side by side justin markswill again choose the line that will make him left as they head to the start/finishline ty dillon to the right there's his crew chief, mike shiplet. could he take anotherdriver to victory lane worked with brennan poole last year on the other xfinity teamfor chip ganassi team. this year he's had the two drivers, kyle larson and this man, justin marks.

>> yeah, is there anyone in this top fouror five that can put enough pressure on justin marks to have him make a mistake that's theirone effort to make him do that. >> as they come to two to go these laps willbe under regulation, and justin marks trying to get the best restart possible can he putthe power down? it's a smooth looking start for marks. dillon as well hornish lookingvery good in the black and red car. >> raining a little harder all clear by twoto the 2. >> hornish is through to second. lally inthe 90 car trying to roll down on the inside groove good distance for marks as they cometo the keyhole. >> we're getting a lot more rain right now,too that's going to be a big factor here

>> ryan reed way off in the 16 car. rainingmore here at mid ohio. justin marks, a lap and a half, two to go. lap and a half nowfor him to get to victory lane. we talked about the rain coming down it puddles in certainareas. that can make a certain hazard he's kicking up the rooster tails.>> blaney trying to take the second spot from sam hornish now.>> down to the heavy braking area of turn four. who has the best shot at it. sam hornishdrives it in deep. marks makes it through hornish and a half have i gates. navigates.blaney backs off ty dillon falls back and allgaier runs fifth.>> ty dillon couldn't get his car going on the outside lane on the restart at all theywant to recover there still in the mix right

now anything can happen from this point.>> blaney with a lot of pressure on hornish now here's much heavier rain in this partof the course, d.j. >> yeah, you can see the front there fromjustin marks car, he lost it quite a bit but with light braking was able to keep it undercontrol. >> victory lane in sight for marks if he canjust maintain that control top five running very close together you see the running lightsthere. they are not brake lights. it keeps the driverinformed of what's happening with the car in front. that may be a good or bad thingdepending where it's going marks through turn 12. and the left hand der turn 13 coming backto the start/finish line for the final lap

of the race unless we see the caution, onelap to go sponsored by credit one bank >> probably as hard a rain as they have encounteredthe entire day right here for this final lap. >> marks doing everything he can to focuswhere is a good spot to run the 42 car hornish within reach.>> yeah, trying to get out where he can see you can see that but he found some puddlesout there, sam hornish did, as he approached turn two.>> you see the water pouring away from the goodyear eagles. they channel the water outthere's a lot of it coming out from them now. just pouring down through the cake and downthrough turn four. >> down here in the four>> he's got to be so careful, d.j.

>> yeah, right now it's just the racetrackthat he's having to deal with right now. i'm looking at other cameras that we have there'sreally no one else off the course that should impede his progress, but it's just a matterhow hard he can attack and stay on the track. >> coming to the checkered flag. appears tobe clear for justin marks but he's got about seven more corners to negotiate. cleanly throughsix. >> yeah, this is exactly what he's done allday better than everyone else in these severe conditions that he's encountering right nowwhat a very, very nice job of staying in front of sam hornish.>> last weekend wife aaron and justin welcomed baby presley into their world could they haveanother big day for the marks family here?

carefully up to that lefthander goes justinmarks needing and using the entire racetrack final two corners for marks. can he do it he's through 12. he makes theleft-hand turn through turn 13 and justin marks is going to win at mid ohio!>> yeah! you did it, baby you did it chu. >> good job. thank you so much.>> wahoo >> thank you>> guys, congratulations you guys did this. make sure you keep your radios dry.>> take care of the equipment. couple more races coming in line here jones staying infront of lally for sixth. and this remarkable day is coming to a close finally here at themid ohio sports car course there's darrell

wallace. had so much going early on he'llcome across unofficially 15th there is the winner. oh, my goodness, justin marks. lookat the joy from that driver >> you know, we talked about all the pointsthat could possibly change hands today around that bubble spot. they changed by one, onepoint is all that it was as blake koch was 12th and ross chastain was 14th so not muchdifference there from the afternoon. >> parker's caught up with the winning crewchief, mike shiplet. >> he's putting his radios down. it's absolutelypouring here congratulations from other members on the team. mike, crazy day. variable dayalso emotional day for this team to go out there and get in victory lane>> it's great for the caterra chevrolet. justin

marks getting his first win. great for theteam now we have justin and kyle winning both in the 42 car great day for chip ganassi racingeverybody back at the shop built two new road course cars and couldn't be prouder of everybody. gave 100% and that's what we need to do towin the cases. >> mike shiplet going to head to victory lanedave >> parker, this track has been good to justinmarks his career best up to this point in the xfinity series came right here two yearsago it was a sixth. >> yeah. what a great job they did of managingthis race, of knowing when to put -- which tires to keep on their driver, when to keephim out we questioned how long they stayed

out on the first run after they put the raintires on, but he was doing a great job of managing and they did everything right todaygreat job. >> justin marks heads toward victory lanewe will join him when we come back to mid ohio we'll talk to him, find out what he thoughtof today. mentioned, they didn't change much over onthe right the bubble standings, blake koch gained a solid point over ross chastain dakodaarmstrong and jeremy clements. >> tough day for jeremy clements finishedin 34 he lost a lot to the 12th place spot blake koch did a nice job. off course a coupleof times but was able to manage and keep his car in the right direction a solid finishin 12th.

>> parker kligerman has caught up with secondplace finisher sam hornish jr. >> from winning the pole to coming back tosecond. what did you see from your point of view?>> i couldn't see a whole lot then by about five laps into a run we only got windshieldwiper on one side you're kind of guessing where you're going good day for the greenchevrolet. even given the opportunity there at the end, i couldn't do anything with him.i mean, i would have had to take massive chances with our car to be able to do anything, thenyou still have to pass him even just to keep up with him. proud of what the guys gave meon the 2 car today wish we would have gotten a little bit more out of it. in the dry, ifeel like we could win. justin went out there

and was a monster in the wet.>> you mentioned how good justin was. what did you need to be able to go out there andchallenge him for the victory. >> a couple of times we got up there in thefront and got pushed off and then i got excited trying to get back up through the field. eventhere towards the end we were second. we couldn't do anything with him. i don't know if maybethey put some things more in their car that was able to do that, but i raced with himback at road america a few years ago in the rain and he was -- he was very fast then aswell. so i just -- i mean, i had a feeling that if it rained that he would be somebodyi had to contend with. >> congratulations.>> heading over to ryan blaney here ryan,

mind if i grab you for a second crazy dayfor you as well. up and down, spinning, coming all the wayback what did you see from your point of view? >> a lot of grass towards the end of the racefor me i kept running off that was a lot of mistakes, but we had a really fast car therain and then stopping and drying out, that was a blast i hope it was fun for the fansto watch that was fun to drive. trying to figure out when to put slicks back on andwhen to put wets back on that was cool. we were so fast before the last caution whenit stopped raining i found a deal that was good when it started raining again, that wasn'tgood congrats to justin that's nice to see thank you for letting me do it and it wasfun.

>> crew chief mentioned you were able to practicerain racing in go carts at the go pro motorplex. is there anything you can say this was liketoday? >> not really. maybe if you went out in aford mustang and bald tires in the rain that was about it. but just fun, man. it was coolto go out and laugh a lot and get angry and get over with and realize it's tough to messup. just a lot of fun. >> congratulations also move over to ty dillonhere man, you led the race, got off track. what did you need there to maybe battle that42 for the victory at the end >> the rain was not really my friend my gameplan was just stay on track. probably did one of the better jobs of doing that and putus in the front row at the end of the race

didn't want to see that last caution. needto get over to go pro motorplex and practice we were able to take the lead in the dry.as soon as it started raining again, we kind of became a top five car it was all aboutsurviving and congratulations to justin. he really had the rain line right.>> you mentioned that rain line and all the things you were experiencing what stuck outto you as the toughest conditions we had at what point in the race>> the track conditions changed when it was raining. when it would pour it would be different.if you had a couple of laps without any rain you could start hustling different you hadto drive different lines. at certain times my line was good then itwould rain harder and my line wasn't as good.

you had to move around it was about beingconsistent, staying on the track i messed up one time on the keyhole and got off trackand lost ground to justin there. i don't think we were the strongest car in the rain butwe did a good job of surviving. the guys did a great job of starting last and coming upthrough the field. it was a lot of fun and we'll go on to bristol.>> ty dillon survived for fourth. >> the make shift victory lane is full ofcelebration justin marks's first career xfinity series win special day, i'm sure. how wouldyou describe it? >> these are as tough conditions as you canput drivers in. i mean, just -- it's just really hard on everybody when it's dry andwet and you don't really know what to do.

strategy plays a big role in everything myspecialty is road racing in the rain in these stock cars i don't get much of an opportunityto do it when the opportunity presents itself, you have to really take advantage of it. andi about threw away today i knew if the race ended in the rain that we'd have a shot at winning. i wish my family was here. i'm just reallyhappy. >> what does this mean for you personally>> i mean, it means the world. we're thinking about bryan and his family>> the decal on the seat of ganassi. >> yeah, bryan's short career in stock carracing came with chip ganassi racing it's great to put this in victory lane we're justthinking about tim and laura. he's a real

american hero race car driver, bryan was. they don't make him like that anymore. i'llbe at knoxville here in probably -- >> here in the xfinity series for chip ganassiracing. congratulations. >> parker?>> dave? >> d.j., a lot of emotion right there.>> yeah, a lot of emotion. a lot of different reasons one thing i will disagree with inthese conditions, not be a friend what an outstanding job by him he has different skillsand skill levels and he showed exactly what his were here today. he's an outstanding driveranyway, but that was just amazing to watch him navigate through the most difficult conditionsthat

this series has ever been through, i believe.>> wife erin and baby presley very proud of him back at home we appreciate you hangingaround with us today and watching great racing and to see what justin marks did. we'll see youat bristol motor speedway next weekend for parker kligerman, mike massaro, dale jarretthere in the booth. i'm dave burns and saying thank you so much for enjoying the hits, andthey kept coming, here at the midhi oo sports car course make sure you tune in next timewe have nascar racing. we'll see you in bristol next week there's your winner todayat mid ohio, justin marks
