autocentrum.pl - indipendent automotive portal tests. presentations reliable reviews welcome! after the jeep showed the newest cherokee generation, which at the beginning did not take a liking to everybody, but at the end everybody liked it. jeep can show whatever for me - i am sure everybody will like it. that's exactly what happened with the jeep renegade. the smallest jeep has been shown last year in paris and maybe it's not the most beautiful or finesse,
but, believe me: at the end everybody will like it. i invite you to the test! at the beginning i already said that this car will probably not win the beauty competition, but all what we see is not random. it all refers to the jeep's tradition, exactly to the jeep willys, which symbols we'll find in many places inside and outside. we see a characteristic, boxed bodywork, almost square wheel arches, many unlacquered bodywork elements, characteristic round headlights, 7 ribs on the grill. no, not such ribs! it's worth to mention the pattern, which we can see on the headlights and taillights.
they refer to the creases on the jeep willys' canister. before i tell you about the engines, it's worth to mention the connection between this car and the fiat 500x. they share the floorpan with the steel monocoque, but the americans decided to remodel the suspension. in the front we have the mcpherson's colums and in the back the chapman system. besides that we have disc brakes on all 4 wheels and a titbit: optionally we can have a 9-gear gearbox. in our tested model we have a 6-gear manual transmission. for the smallest jeep model the engine palette is quite ample. we can choose between 3 petrol and 3 diesel engines. the basic diesel version is 1.6 multijet 120 hp. we also have a 2.0 multijet, which can have 140 or 170 hp.
in the petrol engines we find a 1.4 l engine and that's quite strange, because a 4.1 l would be more suitable for the jeep. 1.4 l with 140 or 170 hp and an intake low engine 1.6 with 110 hp. in our tested version there is a 1.4 multiair 140 hp petrol engine. the declared acceleration is 10,9 sec to 100 km/h and i beat this result already by the 1st time for almost 1 sec, so i think the americans took into account the average passengers' weight. the maximal speed: 181 km/h. the declared average consumption is 6 l / 100 km. on the highway not much more than 5 l and in the city 7,6 l / 100 km. i just want to say that from our measurements resulted that all these results can be beaten down, so it's better than the producer declares. that's why the small, 48 l tank does not surprise. driving calmly we can even drive 900 km.
it's worth to prais the jeep for a cap free fuel filler. we just open the flip cover and fuel. the jeep renegade is offered in 3 versions: with the front wheel drive, then we have 17 cm of ground clearance, or with the four-wheel drive, and then we have either 20 or 22 cm of ground clearance, depending on the version: active drive or active drive low. the first one is a simplified version, where the clutch appends the rear-wheel drive. the low version is available with the 9-gear ztf transmission, where the 1st gear fulfills a fuction of the reductor and daily the car starts to drive from the 2nd gear. we have many different additives, we can equip this car in more terrain tires or with some additives from the mopar series, which can optionally remind us about the military derivation of this car. it all depends of how much money do we have, because all these additives do not cost less. we are testing today the version with the front-wheel drive, that's why we decided not to drive to any terrain conditions and test this car in the sand.
we'll do it, if we get to test the four-wheel drive version. now the 2-meter man test. you should not worry about the result, although that's the smalles jeep model. above my head i have 7-8 fingers of free space, the steering wheel is regulated in 2 levels in a wide range, so everybody will fit in here. the steering wheel is very pleasant, dick and lies nicely in the hands. the seat is not very comfortable, but we have a symbol of the jeep willys, which should be enough. the headrest does not come out really high, but itself is so big, that even a 2-meter man can rest his head on it. the seat is really hard, so it is not a dreamed-of seat for long trips. there are also siderests, but put so wide from each other, that i don't even feel them while seated, and i am not the smallest. probably they are done for an american client. we can regulate electrically the lumbar part in one level, also the height can be regulated in one level.
besides that the front, the back and the angle of the back rest can be regulated normally. let's see now how much place remained behind me. in the back it turns out, that the front seat is a seat with massage, because when a 2-meter man will seat behind a 2-meter man he will give him a nice massage. i fitted in, even comfortably, because the seat is pleasant and soft, so putting the knees in it i don't feel any discomfort, but probably the person sitting in front of me, unless he will like it! above my head i still have a lot of space, about 3 fingers of free space, so it's not bad really. i move to the right side. there are no big obstacles, because the central tunnel is not too high. it's maybe a bit large, but it's ok. when the front seat is set for somebody who is about 1,80 m tall, i now fit in without any problem. above my head there is a lot of space.
we don't have any comfortable solutions, like armrest or cup holders, so we will have to be satisfied with the bottle-profiled place in the doors. we have no ventilation in the back. we have some pockets behind the front seats. besides that, that's the end of the story, if it's about any comfortable additives. now it's time to take a look in the rear compartment and it will not be so easy, at least for a 2-meter man. the opening grip is situated not here, but under the lower edge of the tailgate, so i need to bend every time. after opening it, we get 351 l of capacity and for a car which is about 4,20 m long that's a quite reasonable result. we have regular forms, we have some detents, some hooks, which are not very practical.
they should stand out a bit more to make catching the bags on it a little more comfortable, because here we can probably only catch a dental thread. we have lights on both sides, a 12v spot on the left side. we have to possibility to put an additional shelf, and so after folding the back seats this brinks that we are seeing right now will disappear (this way we get 1297 l of capacity). unfortunately, i don't have such a shelf in our tested car, but we can easily imagine how it would look like. we would get a flat floor after folding the back seats. the floor is not really solid, but well performed. under the floor we find a repair set, because in the jeep renegade we have to pay additionally 1.000 zl for a spare wheel. besides that we also have a few cubbies. everybody chooses what he wants. i think that somebody who buys this car with the front-wheel drive does not drive to a hard terrain and a repair set will be enough for him. the interior part of the renegade reminds us at every turn that we are in the jeep.
in the jeep with traditions and roots. we have many symbols, like the inscription since 1941 or to new adventures right next to the ignition. down here we have many willys symbols, some map. also in the cup holders we find these pound signs, which we also see outside the car. on the speaker's case we also find a willys symbol. up here the ventilation is also made like the willys symbol. the designers went a bit crazy. the teenage aspiration is shown by this embellishment on the tachometer at 7000-8000 rpm - here it starts to happen something, here the mud will splash. so it is nice to seat in here and to feel the atmosphere of this car. everything is assembled really solidly, it's hard to complain about anything.
all the console is nicely performed, with soft materials. here we can find a matt plastic, but really pleasant and does not scratch. this grip is really solid, not only from the appearance. also the doors do not make any noise so everything is really solid. the central tunnel does not move and scratch, so everything is done nicely and solidly. we recognize the cherokee's steering wheel, with its appropriate grip. we also see a big, colored display on the dashboard, where we can choose between many options (i will show it in another film fragment) on the doors we have a hard, but pleasant plastic. down here is already softer. under the left elbow is quite soft.
on the right side is even better. if it's about the practical side, here we have an usb spot, a quite big cubby (i found another map!). here there is another cubby, here 2 cup holders. in the doors we can put a bottle and some little things. the glove compartment is comfortable and opens slowly. the jeep, with all its tradition and with its spartan approach can be luxurious, comfortable and well performed. if i had to complain about something, i found just 2 things: the case form of this ventilation steering. we have a bulging side and while driving the knee is always in contact with this hard plastic. for longer trips it's not really comfortable. and the second thing: the central console is set vertically and it is not comfortable to operate this touch-screen. a bit tilted would be better, but that's just a detail.
overseeing this fragment, which disturbs on longer trips, it's hard to hook on something in the interior part of this car. the plastics on the doors in the front are hard, so they are also hard in the back, but there is a difference. the armrest in the front is comfortable and soft and in the back we'll find maybe just 1 mm of foam. to rate the driving impressions in the jeep renegade, we have to remember that this is not a crossover, not a boulevard car. it's not a car, which main aim will be driving on a curb in the city. it's a car, that equipped well, like in the four-wheel drive, will handle fantastically terrain conditions. we have the front-wheel drive, but the suspension is always ready to make a big jump. we have a big ground clearance for a car, that has the front-wheel drive. with the four wheel-drive it's even bigger.
we also have appropriately lifted up centre of gravity. if we look at those driving attributes through a prism of these terrain characteristics, it turns out that this car on the asphalt (because that's where the front-wheel drive version will spend most of the time) gets by surprisingly well. the gearbox, we have a 6-gear one, is very precise, the gears switch really clearly, comfortable to grip (aluminium stick shift - fantastic solution). so we cannot have any remark to it. the 140 hp engine gets by really well, it likes to rotate high, only at 5500 rpm has its maximal power. around 5.000 rpm we hear a specific sound from under the hood, but already around 2.000 rpm it already accelerates very well, because the maximal torque begins from less than 2.000 rpm. this gearbox, although it has quite short gear changes, does not require changing gears all the time, because even at lower rotations this car gets by very well. the steering wheel is assisted a bit too much, in my opinion, especially when we turn into a small curve. we turn the steering wheel a little bit and then it becomes a bit empty, it does not weight anything. when we turn a bit sharper, then in a faster curve we'll feel its weight and the feedback from the front wheels.
the general impression is really positive, especially when we drive fast and have to do a fast maneuvr this car does not lean so much. we could expect exactly the opposite from a car which is that high. the suspension gives us clearly the information how the road is, but at the same time is not very rigid. so for the suspension a big plus. the engine is not a rocket, but it gets by really well already from lower rotations, so it's very good too. if somebody wants to have the jeep just for its appearance, then this version is ok. but i think that this jeep will be complete, when it will have at least the basic version with the four-wheel drive. i understand the jeep, because most clients will choose the front-wheel drive, no it would be not very reasonable if they didn't offer this car with the front-wheel drive. generally, i think that everything is on its place,so both clients with the front- and four-wheel drive will be satisfied with this car. the price bracket is really big, i think that everybody will find something for oneself.
the price begins with 69.900 zl for the sport version with the weakest, 110 hp petrol engine. the most expensive version costs almost 124.000 zl in the trailhawk version, equipped in the 9-gear automatic transmission with the strongest, 170 hp diesel engine under the hood and the four-wheel drive in the most terrain version. our tested car is in the limited variant with the 1.4, 140 hp petrol engine with the front-wheel drive and the manual gearbox. it costs 88.000 zl so is situated somewhere in the middle of the price list. in the standard equipment, which is quite solid, we'll find the automatic 2-zone air conditioning, lane assist or the cruise control. the list of additional equipment is quite long. 2.500 zl cost the 18-inch rims, 4.500 zl costs the leather upholstery, the navigation costs 4.800 zl. if somebody wants to go crazy, then for 6.200 zl will buy the roof window with 2 panels, which can be taken out. the competition in this segment is quite big, but if we only consider cars, which have a big engine palette and different drives it turns out, that the competition is not so ample anymore.
if we add the criterion that i can seat on this car without being afraid that i will damage something there will be even less competitors. i chose 3 cars: fiat 500x, as the next of kin costs 10.000 zl less in the basic version. there is also the mazda cx-3 which costs 66.900 zl and is a bit stronger, because it has 120 hp in the basic version. there is also the skoda yeti with 105 hp and costs the same as the mazda cx-3. the most expensive would be the subaru xv, which costs 10.000 zl than the basic renegade version. i sustain my opinion that the renegade is not the most beautiful car on the market, but if somebody looks for a beautiful boulevard car or a sweet crossover, the market does not lack other models, like fiat 500x. this car, instead of being beautiful, prefers to be raw and look at the world with those characteristic, round, feisty headlights. it's not that feisty though, because look: in the front it also has a smile. anyway, if we get in and see all these soft and pleasant materials we will understand that it's not 100% raw. it just fakes.
