this week on dirt every day we're going toshow you how to rescue an old jeep from a barn and the snowdrift because we'reon an adventure oh my toes are cold come check this out i know a lot ofpeople and when some friends of mine told me they had a jeep for sale i told him i would help them find a newowner so they sent me photos and the next thing you know i'm buying this jeep check this out 72 wagoneer one owner 80,000 miles barnfind right here
this jeep has been in this garage thepast 13 years and has not moved i found the 1972 owner's manual check thisout five 1778 four michelin installed mileage 55 886 these tires have been onsince 1978 it's probably time to put some newrubber on this thing somebody went through the owners manual readeverything and made notes like this one we repeat don't travel diagonally acrossthe hill unless absolutely necessary who doesthat this guy is awesome this episode i'mgoing to bring some friends in we're
going to get this thing running andwe're going to go on an adventure so i brought some friends along in thisepisode we got a 4-door jeep here so bruce's with me how are you doing bruce i alsogot de lene and ashley the girls are hanging out in the cabinkeeping warm because they're way smarter than us we're going to hang out here in thisreally frigid cold garage laying on this cold concrete floor and try to get a 40some year old jeep running in about two days so that we can go on an adventure so this jeep has an amc 360 under thehood
it's an automatic transmission which isprobably a turbo 400 as a spicer 20 transfer case behind that and the wholejeep is on leaf springs it's a pretty simple vehicle but it'sbeen sitting awhile and we're going to go over a few things you need to do whenyou have a vehicle like this you don't really know any history about check this out it's gotta warn 8274winch on the front that's like the iconic jeep winch right there we got a bunch of parts here and we'rejust going to kind of go through all the basic stuff like any vehicle it's beensitting you really don't know you know
where where to start so you start witheverything fluids belts wires i already put a newbattery on it when i hooked up the battery earlier it read a quarter of a tank sowe're going to try and get the old gas out get fresh gas in there get that gasup to the engine and then go from there we have fueled we have sparked how doesour coolant look suck squeeze bang blow your basic things that you need to makean engine run when she fires then we make sure it stops make sure it stops oh look at this thing back in here is wherethe jack should live yeah something's been living in here we got the cure for this
yuck hey i found a jack you can see how the jack is rusting awayit's all still there it's just kind of getting rusty all of these parts are theprobably the original jack that came with this jeep so we gotta figure out if there's anyfuel in this thing the gauge is reading a quarter of a tank when you tap on itlike i'm tapping on down here with my pocket knife it sounds like the tank is almostcompletely empty there's a nice skin plate under it but idon't see any drain plug because it's
reading so low and it sounds empty let's put 10 gallons of fresh gas in itand go from there i think that sounds reasonable gotta put fresh gas in have 10 gallonsof gas in these cool old german swedish jerry cans to get the gas out of thereinto here you can get the nozzle but then you have to stand here and holdof the thing in place and i also forgot the nozzle but i have this this amazing contraptionis called the safety siphon it's a little brass contraption with amarble switched inside attached to a
hose and you stick this down in partthat you want to take the fuel from and you put this in the part you want tomake take the fuel to and then through the magic of science you just shake this thing and notice howwhen you shake it the marble starts pumping the gas until the gas startsflowing boom that's slick it's based on science yeahthey're hard to find these safety siphons but you should track one down everybody should have one and whilethat's going on we can change the fuel
filters on to fuel filters all right let's do it if two types offuel filters here they should have an arrow this one has an arrow right there so itshould come in this side and out this side clear ones are handy because youcan see if it's actually flowing fuel if it is going through if the filter isreally dirty the metal ones are probably a little bitmore robust so this one we're going to put beforethe fuel pump to see if the fuel is coming out
this will put after the fuel pump andrunning up to the carburetor i have multiples of these because youget an old jeep like this in your head down the road and all likelihood thethings on a clogged up at some point you always throw a spare fuel filters in we're probably going to reuse the fuel lines unless they really start fallingapart as we start swapping it over but for the most part hook these up run ourfresh gas up to our carb and see if we can make this thing cranked over i'm a little concerned about the fuelpump and we have a new fuel pump so all right our plan here is tojust swap it in put the new fuel pump on
because we have a garage and we have asemi warm floor versus trying to put a new fuel pump in on the side of the road and the side ofthe trail in mud here you can see our old fuel filteryou know is how varnished and yellow it's become here's a brand new one this is running from the fuel tank onthis side run through here you'll would actually see the fuel going through seeif it clumps up in the filter and then from here we'll go into the fuel pump andout of the fuel pump it goes to another metal fuel filter and then that runs up to thecarb
hey guys hey chad's here what's going onman i got you some goods yes the jeep already has awinch on the front but i called up chad chad lives down the road works forwarren and i wanted to make sure that the winch was dialed in before we go off roading as far as i'mconcerned when you're building a four by four a winch is one of the first thingsyou want to buy so that you can drive the vehicle stock learn how it workslearn how to drive off road get yourself stuck get unstuck and thenyou kind of learn what i need next do i need bigger tires do i need a lift kitsomebody had repaired the cable right
here and though that is probably fine in an emergency i would much rather havea brand-new cable on it yeah well i didn't know what you had the hook so weget to the new epic cook over there with safety latch on us a couple shacklestree saver snatch block pair of gloves in the side pocket you should always wear gloves becausewhen your winch line gets like this yep that's when you get hurt you getyour fingers jabbed with that so let's pull this old cable off but thenew one on
and get this thing ready to go getstuck in the mud somewhere alright it's cold out she's still hard to pullisn't it i'll just pull just pulled a winch we made it so on a 8274 the winchcable runs inside the drum if to undo this little cover on the endand then we'll undo the bolt that holds the cable in there but the new cable on loop that back on itself top secret stuff put some weight on it beautiful well i'm changing out thespark plugs and wires and a cap and
rotor eventually right now i'm working on the spark plugsthis is one of the old plugs that came out of there we're putting the same onesback in it they don't look too bad actually theylook like they look about what you would expect from a ring of this type i've been doing this very methodicallywell everybody's working on other things around here i've been putting one plug in one wireat a time that way i make sure i get everythingstraight i don't make any mistakes
i always like to thread the spark plugsin by hand to make sure that i don't have anything cross threaded in there we're going to bring it down until youfeel it touch the washer and then get a bout eigth to a quarter of a turn just snuglike that till it's nice and tight now i'm just going to trace this wireback pull the wires one at a time you cannot match these up get them asclose they're not always perfectly the exact length but this way we can matchthem up and that one's perfect this little connector on there sometimes ilike to pull these out just a little bit
make sure that i get a really good nice little click and then carefullyslip the boot over onto the plug that we would not work not going to have any misfires wire backup through the loom clicker on over there there we go that will just do the samething on the next one let's go check list ok gas check fuelfilters check fuel pump check spark plugs check wires check cap check rotorcheck belts battery new battery new winch cable so that ifthe thing doesn't run we can winch
ourselves to the national park i think it's time to see what happens oh come on that's high performance right this 360 cubicinches of america put it in gear and see if it moves alright alright lets tell the girls were leavingfirst thing in the morning let's go for a road trip this thing is beautiful what do you think its a good day for a road tripi know isn't it perfect still like a sherpa how much stuff did you guys pack
what do you think its awesome so where we headed we're goingto put new tires on it and then we're going to go to the mountains alright road trip day one here we go family vacation look at that 50 miles an hour speedometers like an auction 40 45 45 4550 50 55 we're going to upgrade to some bf mud trains we're not planning on seeing a
lot of off-roading in this vehicle butyou never know and it's always better to have some mud tires on your four by four we're going to try and get down to bendoregon which is right in the middle of the state crater lake is a national parkthat's in oregon and i want to try and get there but our plan today is get tobend we'll regroup there and then try to get the national park tomorrow this thing used to be a station wagonand now it's like an off-road monster look at those it's amazing what tires do put knobbytires on anything and it looks awesome
thank you for a jeep that's been sitting for 13years and is close to 45 years old this wagoner is doing awesome thecabin is so bright and airy with all these giant windows the jeep cruisesdown the highway 55 60 the transmission shifts great we're getting right aroundnine to 10 miles per gallon it could probably use some new shocksthere's tons of traction out of our bfg tires maybe the carb could use a rebuildbut overall i'm really excited about this jeep view
that looks about right yesterday we went up there to mount hood we drove through the night and the snowand we ended up here in bend that's what we're going crater lake lookthere's the oregon cascades recreational area maybe we can go four wheeling therewe'll find something between here and there sounds like a good plan dideverybody get enough coffee what's that guy doing yeah let's go over there come on big jeep
i can't get out of my door so bruce forthe cable over there to that tree and we'll get over this snow berm and we'llsee how much farther we can get you don't want to wrap the cable around atree because it will actually scar the tree so you put the tree saver around it ashackle on the end hook the winch to that we're actually gonna winch ourselvesover this snow berm and hopefully the road will be clear enough that we canget in there further alright so the snow here is much deeperthan the frame to tire bottom we can come up to here grab that tree and turn andwinch into it almost there bruce
that snow mo bike he made it look easythe ladies are laughing at us right now good thing we have the guy along to dothis for us no if we didn't have the guys along we wouldn't be in these predicaments fred is hooking it up to the tree over herewe're going to pull the front end around start our turn back to go back out winch in you gotta drive you got to make sure your exhaust pipeis not buried in a snowdrift because it will pump all that exhaust back in the car andyou'll be waiting for help get really sleepy fall asleep and neverwake up plan d you're trying to pull the rear end of the car
this way since we have too much snow toplow that direction tighten it up turn it up and hold it right there any other options well the motor on the winch is gettinghot so we're going to cool her off a little bit at this point we're hooking up toanother tree to pull another direction we're just kind of bottom out on theframe tires are hanging well gentle gentle
remember how you got the film in hawaiibrad you're like this shows the best show ever i love working for this show let's go snow wheeling fred said let's goon an adventure fred said what could go wrong fred said how about we call aaa i hate snow wheeling do see joe going out all alone and we'relike that guy is pretty brave can you pull us out right now well guess we'll all find out together you really don't want to hook a bunch ofstraps together and especially don't hook bunch of straps with hardware and achain but you'll notice here what we did
we loop the strip's between themselves so if one of these is to fail you justhave a strap flying in the air you never want to put a metal shackle ora piece of chain in between if it's in the middle there's so much pressureinside of one of these snaps and it will take out camera guys we don't have ashow you won't have anything to watch everytuesday of every month back up and get a little bump just a little bump there we go that's all she needed so the other day i said the first thing
upgrade you should put on your yourvehicle your 4x4 is a winch but in fact before that you shouldalways take a buddy with a tow strap that's the first thing you should takewhen you go four wheeling it took a little bit longer than expectedbut snow wailing is so much fun next stop crater lake national park i mean you really need to take the timeto do stuff like this and you know you just go crater lakes really cool weshould go up there sometime you really need to take the time to dothis in life when this car was new in 72 and was that emphasis back then get in the
car get the family together it wasn'tabout achieving miles right it was about seeing what you can see we're almost at crater lake come on this is so cool here we go there you go alex i look at it look atthe hills over here and look at this this should be on everybody's bucketlist look at that this is why you should find a cool oldjeep in the garage it's been sitting for 13 years fix it and go check outsomeplace awesome in america there's all these cool national parks are so manycool things you can go see just find a
vehicle and go on an adventure thats it for dirt every day we'll seeyou next time if you liked this episode of dirt everyday you can watch the next episode live right now on motor trend on demand . comthis week on dirt every day we're turning this old range rover into the ultimateover landing vehicle this week on dirt every day we built the ultimateprerunner out of this old ford ranger that'll never work what i've beentelling you watch the latest episode of dirt everyday right now on motor trend on demand i can tell you a lot of history aboutcrater lake i know that crater lake is
what's left over of a volcano a meteorhit the volcano and the meteor brought the aliens that started the great aliendinosaur wars and then godzilla came and stopped the dinosaurs wars because he was had a warn winch i don't know that's this might not becompletely true
